re: walk it out

so dan savage has come under criticism for a speech he gave at the High School Journalism convention. he blasted those who frame their opposition to gay marriage and homosexuality more generally in terms of the bible and said that we need to learn how to get passed the “bullshit” in the bible (such as prohibitions against shellfish, women leaving their heads uncovered, and yes, everyone’s favorite homosexuality). i’m actually writing a longer bit on how we should get passed the bullshit in the bible, but any other text that but I have some thoughts one the walk out itself.

now even though i’m all about free speech and respecting dissenting opinions (indeed, i champion it), i’m not saying it’s never inappropriate to walk out of someone’s talk to drive home the point of how ridiculous and out of touch with reality what they’re saying actually is (a la mahmoud ajmadinejad). but as far as dan savage is concered, at the end of the day, what he’s about the bible is actually in the bible. there are answers to moral questions this society takes for granted. many of the specific rules but forward in the bible (in both the old and new testaments) are mildly to concertedly abhorrent to those contemporary human values we take for granted. if you asked those kids what they felt about the values promoted by a whole host verses without telling them it was from the bible, they’d probably say “that’s bullshit.” in walking out to “stand up” for the truth of the bible, they’re really only walking away from it. you shouldn’t get indignant if it’s true.
